What the adenoid is and when it becomes a problem
The adenoid is a pad of immune tissue sitting behind the nasal cavity, where the nose meets the throat. Like the tonsils, it produces antibodies against incoming microbes, and like the tonsils it can turn from defender into problem.
When the adenoid grows too large, it blocks the airway it sits beside. Breathing shifts to the mouth; nights bring wheezing and snoring; the ear stops ventilating, so fluid gathers and hearing dulls. Concentration suffers, and infections find a place to settle. The picture is most common in children, where untreated blockage can even affect the development of the facial bones. The diagnosis, though, is made by examination, not by age.
How the operation goes
Surgery is considered when the adenoid does not shrink on its own and medication has not solved the problem. The operation is short: about fifteen to twenty minutes, under general anesthesia, through the mouth, with no incision. Most patients return to normal life the next day. If the tonsils do not need to be removed at the same time, recovery is usually very comfortable.
Frequently asked questions
At what age is adenoid surgery performed?
It can be needed from early childhood; when the situation allows, waiting until the age of three or four is preferred. Every case is assessed individually at the examination.
Is the operation risky?
It is among the most frequently performed and shortest ENT operations, with no incision. As before any operation under anesthesia, the risks are explained openly before a decision is made.
What happens if an enlarged adenoid is left untreated?
Mouth breathing, snoring, ear fluid and recurring infections continue, and in children long-standing blockage can affect facial development and speech. Timely examination prevents exactly this.
